Today on the second day on the Komatsu-Yamanaka trip we visited Yamanaka, where we saw many Japanese traditional art, crafts, and Ryokan.
One that took my interest the most was the art of Japanese woodturning. We visited the work place of the Kiji makers. Kiji (木地)are the wooden bowls before the Urushi or the Japanese Lacquer is painted on. We were lucky enough to observe the masters of woodturning do their work. The craftsman would use a potter's wheel and their own carving tools make round bowls, plates and cups. There is a picture of one of the masters carving a bowl.
This experience deepened my interest in Japanese woodwork and made me appreciate the art even more.^^
